Housing Based Support

Find a service:

Housing First

The Housing First team work closely with landlords and the local authority to help people find a permanent home quickly – rather than finding temporary solutions (such as a hostel place) – in Swansea.

Ongoing support is then put in place to help them settle in and maintain their new home.

The project provides help with issues beyond housing, such as:

  • Budgeting
  • Benefits
  • Employment
  • Mental health
  • Substance use

Support should be based around a person’s strengths rather than their problems, with services working proactively to encourage engagement in other areas.

  • Housing is a human right
  • Service users should have choice and control
  • Housing is not conditional on support or treatment
  • Support is recovery oriented
  • Support focuses on harm reduction
  • Active engagement without coercion
  • Planning is person-centred
  • Flexible support is available, as long as required

Swansea Housing First is a partnership between Kaleidoscope, The Wallich and Swansea Council.

Foundations

The Foundations project can help in the following ways:

  1. Community Floating Support – The team help people at risk of homelessness across Flintshire
  2. Prison Link Worker – This person helps people currently in prison, to settle them back into the community, get back into employment and find suitable housing

The projects aims are to:

  • Prevent homelessness
  • Help people to live a happier and healthier life independently
  • Support people to find their own home or sheltered housing

Here’s how Foundations helped Simon to get back on his feet…

I first came into service with Foundation in 2014 when I was released from prison, they helped me with my benefits and I went to live with my mother.

She had recently moved from a first-floor flat down to a ground floor flat because she had trouble with her legs. At first the flat was nice, clean and had recently been painted. But after a few months damp began to appear, and before long the place was covered in it. I told Phil, my Foundations worker, about this and he came out to have a look. He contacted Flintshire County Council and requested that we be moved on health grounds.  Phil created a report, along with support letters from our GPs, and helped my mother and I move to a two bedroom house in Holywell. Phil helped us with the council tax reduction, water rates reduction, and any other benefits we were entitled to.

If ever we got stuck with anything, bills or benefits, Phil was always willing to help out.
